The researcher of the great poet Jeffrey Aspern comes to Venice to meet his former beloved Juliana Bordereau, who lives with unmarried niece Miss Tita in a large house and does not communicate with anyone.

Juliana has letters from Aspern, which the hero of the story wants to get hold of, but she hides them from everyone and stops all attempts of biographers and admirers of Aspern to get acquainted with her.

Knowing that she lives in poverty, the hero decides to take a few rooms from her…
